For one of the most truly historic towns in the United States, all one has to do is hop across the water from mainland Texas to Galveston, a coastal city that has seen its share of highs, lows, and face changes over the course of its long history.

Galveston is a thriving town of nearly 50,000 people along the edge of the state that includes a large port, a successful tourism market, large financial institutions, and a major health center that provides education and service to its residents and people from around the state, including LASIK eye surgery. Galveston depended on its port for decades, but since the early part of the 20th century, it has diversified its feel. Now, it includes several tourist attractions for people across the region.

But to truly appreciate Galveston, you also need to know its long history. The first Europeans to come to Galveston were the Spanish, who crashed there in 1528. It was nearly 300 years later, in 1825, that the Port of Galveston was established, making it one of the most important ports on the continent at the time. For a brief period, starting in 1836, Galveston was also the capital of the Republic of Texas. It developed as a port town until 1900, when a major hurricane wiped out much of the city and forced changes to its economy, including the birth of its financial sector.

From its history to its economy to its tourism, Galveston is truly a sight to see. If you have vision problems, you may want to explore laser vision correction.
