LASIK Surgery
LASIK is a special type of eye surgery which aims to reduce an individual’s dependence on contact lenses or specks by empowering his vision.
The LASIK Surgery procedure at a glance:
LASIK is the abbreviated form of Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. The surgery has the ability to change the cornea’s shape. The shape of the cornea is changed with the help of an excimer laser. The flap from the cornea is cut off. A small hinge is allowed to remain at one end of this cut off flap. The stroma is vaporised with the help of pulses from a computer controlled laser. This is only one of the techniques that are used in LASIK surgery. Some other techniques are used too while performing this surgery.
Some conditions for LASIK eye surgery to succeed:
For some individuals LASIK surgery is the best option at hand. However, the procedure is not suitable for everyone. Here are some conditions that will help you figure out whether this is the best surgery for you or not.
- Your eyes will have to be healthy: if your eyes are suffering from some infection or any such thing, you must wait for your eyes to get back to a healthy state. For example, if you are suffering from dryness of the cornea, conjunctivitis, or from any other such things, you must first wait till your eyes become healthy once again. Once the surgery is over, the doctor might give you an eye drop or a medicine of the kind to prevent dryness of the eyes. Cataracts are another dysfunction that you must be cautious about.
- For getting LASIK surgery done, you must be an adult: the law states that you have to be an adult in order to get this operation done to your eyes. In some states the age for getting this surgery done is 18 while in other states the age that you must attain is 21.
- You have to have a stable vision for 1 year at least: young guys and girls have their eye power fluctuating quite often. It has been observed that at the age of 20 (approx.) their vision attains stability. Generally it is near sightedness which fluctuates a lot. But that’s not it. There may be other changes in the eyes as well. Your eye doctor will tell you whether the condition of your eye is stable or not.
- In the case of pregnancy: when you are pregnant, there are a lot of hormonal changes in your body. These lead to a rise in the fluid levels of your body. The shape of your cornea might change leading to a change in your vision. So during this time LASIK surgery is not the best option for you.
Dry eyes are quite common with women who are pregnant. So in that case this type of surgery is a complete no no. this surgery also involves consumption of some antibiotics and steroids. So if you are pregnant, LASIK Surgery is definitely not suitable for you.
