Missouri City, like much of the Southeast Texas region, developed with the railroad, and now it is a fully developed town with complete amenities, like LASIK eye surgery services.
The start of the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos, and Colorado Railway (BBB&C) in 1853 sparked significant development in the region as developers looked to capitalize on the new shipping and residential development opportunities in the area.
Missouri City started in conjunction with the marketing of a small plot of land along the BBB&C. The investors took their pitches up to St. Louis advertising a land of “genial sunshine and eternal summer,” and the land soon developed into 80 acres that would come to be called Missouri City. Soon, farmers and ranchers came to take root in the area.
Shortly thereafter, Missouri City continued with similar developments as the rest of the Houston region, with oil being discovered in 1919. Always at the head of development, Missouri City was the first city in the county to start using natural gas.

Missouri City also fell in with the trend of incorporation in the 1950s, as Houston started to annex territory for its own incorporation during that period. Instead of becoming part of Houston, Missouri City retained self-governance by declaring incorporation in 1956.
Of course, Missouri City still has access to the same resources as much of the rest of the region, including laser vision correction. The Missouri City government is one of the most active in the area in terms of expansion, and it was deemed by Black Entertainment Television as one of the prime middle-class African-American communities in the country.
