The “Town That Would Not Die” has continued strong into the 21st century.

Texas City is a mid-sized city on the southeastern coast of Texas, but it is actually the source of major production for the local (and national) economy. To truly enjoy this bustling hub of activity, you might want to consider LASIK eye surgery to brighten up your vision.

For the first half century of the town’s existence, Texas City was known only as Shoal Point and had relatively little development. All of that changed in the early 1890s, when three duck-hunting brothers identified Shoal Point as a great site for a major port and attracted investors to put up the money for the development of their new town, Texas City.

Soon after the town was founded in 1893, work began on the region, as the Texas City Improvement Company dredged the channel to provide easy access to the Port of Texas City. With the aid of the developing railways in the area, the port developed rapidly, mostly holding strong through the Galveston Hurricane of 1900. In the first decade of the 20th century, Texas City’s port grew from 12 ships in 1904 to 239 by the end of the decade.

The town has seen its share of ups and downs since. Disasters like the 1947 fertilizer chemical explosion and the 2005 BP explosion have rocked Texas City, but the Port of Texas City is still the ninth-largest in the country, and Texas City is also home to the third-largest oil refinery in the nation.

Residents of Texas City have easy access to medical care, including LASIK services, from a number of facilities in the area. LASIK eye surgery can do wonders to clarify the world around you, so if you struggle with poor eyesight, call your Texas City area eye care center to find out more about laser vision correction.
