The City of Clute got its start as a Texas town back in 1824, although its most famous former resident was around long before then. In 2003, a backhoe operator digging near Brazoswood High School came across a pair of tusks as he worked, and when the archaeologists dug further, they found the fossilized remains of a 38,000-year-old mammoth. The mammoth remains were surrounded by the remains of a number of other animals, giving researchers an interesting look at the Ice Age in Texas.
